In today’s AI-driven workplace, two distinct personas—Rebels and Undergrounds—pose unique challenges to organizations embracing technology. According to a study by Slack’s Workforce Lab, these are among five types of AI users commonly found in businesses (source). Understanding and addressing their behaviors is crucial for ensuring the smooth adoption of AI tools and maintaining workplace harmony.
Rebels actively avoid AI, driven by skepticism or fear that it threatens job security. They often view AI use by others as unfair, creating tensions within teams. This resistance can stall innovation, as their refusal to engage with AI limits the benefits of streamlined workflows and data-driven decision-making. Moreover, their mistrust of AI may foster a negative workplace culture, reducing morale and productivity. Left unaddressed, this mindset can lead to higher employee turnover, especially if Rebels feel marginalized in an increasingly tech-centric environment.
Undergrounds, on the other hand, embrace AI but in secrecy. Fearing judgment or reprimand, they use AI tools without transparency, which can result in compliance violations, data security risks, and inconsistent work outputs. This clandestine behavior undermines trust among teams and creates inefficiencies as organizations struggle to track and standardize AI applications.
Together, these two personas represent opposite ends of the spectrum—one resisting AI and the other misusing it. To mitigate these risks, businesses must foster an open dialogue about AI, establish clear usage policies, and provide comprehensive training. By addressing fears and promoting transparency, organizations can bridge the gap between resistance and misuse, ensuring AI’s potential is fully realized while maintaining a collaborative and secure workplace.
